School Of Special Educational Needs: Medical And Mental Health (SSEN:MMH) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year.
The Role
As a Special Needs Education Assistant with SSEN:MMH you will be a highly valued member of a team who should provide quality education to students whose physical or mental health presents difficulties in accessing their usual educational program. You will ideally have the capacity to be flexible, resilient and display initiative to assist students’ educational needs.
Education Assistants at SSEN:MMH support the delivery of planned educational programs as a part of the teaching team. They contribute to the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment. Applicants who possess a good level of IT skills and experience with a range of software packages are highly desirable.
Suitable applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to use these to collaborate with teachers, parents, carers and other stakeholders to foster an inclusive and engaging program, while building positive and nurturing relationships with our students. Applicants who have experience working with students with a broad range of academic, behavioural, and social emotional needs, and who also have knowledge and experience with implementing effective strategies to engage students, are encouraged to apply.
Suitable applicants will ideally possess a high level of interpersonal skills to engage and develop a strong rapport with students, staff and families. They should advocate as part of an effective team and professional learning community to promote success for all students. Meeting the needs of all students requires staff to work collectively with others, being open to varying opinions and perspectives to achieve positive student outcomes. They should display a commitment to our school vision, values and priorities for meaningful and relevant curriculum, a positive learning environment and strong family and community partnerships.
The School
SSEN:MMH is one of seven Specialist Schools within Statewide Services. The SSEN:MMH administrative centre is currently based at Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands, with metropolitan programs in hospital and community health settings in the north and south metropolitan education regions. Staff are timetabled to programs across SSEN:MMH campuses including Bentley, Joondalup, Midland, Murdoch, Shenton Park and Nedlands to ensure we meet the needs of students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and to improve the educational outcomes of these students. Our model of care LETS (Liaise, Educate, Transition and Support) ensures continuity in education to support engagement in learning and transition to the student’s enrolling school or alternative educational program.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
