The Role and our Branch

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and committed educator to work within the Statewide Services division. Statewide Services provides the services and supports required by schools to enable student achievement, with a focus on those students and schools that need it most. The Disability and Inclusion directorate leads the implementation of system strategies and priorities to improve achievement and outcomes for students with disability and diverse learning needs.

Our directorate provides advice to schools and informs the development of strategies, professional learning, resources and tools for staff, to strengthen the capability of the profession in its work with students who have additional learning support needs. We are looking for a team member who has a thorough understanding of contemporary approaches to disability, alongside a deep connection and commitment to schools and the people in them.

As Principal Education Officer, Professional Capability you will lead and facilitate opportunities for teachers to access practical support, information, professional learning and online resources to assist with the implementation of Department priorities to improve outcomes for students with disability and additional learning support needs. 

As a part of this role, you will engage in research and analysis of school performance to identify areas for improvement and to inform the planning and delivery of services and support.  You will assist school leadership teams to develop evidence-based approaches, systems and frameworks that support improved outcomes for students with diverse learning needs.

You will harness and build productive connections in consultation with schools and the profession and work within and across teams and business units to integrate service, support and advice to schools and the system.

  3. Ability to provide leadership and influence change related to teaching and learning.
  4. Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to strategic and complex problems and issues.
  5. Highly developed oral and interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully undertake consultations, collaborations and negotiations with senior officers, school leaders and other stakeholders.
  6. Highly developed written communication skills, including experience in preparing reports, briefings and professional learning resources

Employees will be required to:

  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete
    • the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
    • training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
    • the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
    • the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
