Advertised Vacancy Number: PR817877

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 1, 2024

About the Role

The Ngaanyatjarra Lands School seeks a culturally responsive, team-oriented Executive Principal capable of providing educational and administrative leadership to the seven active campuses spread across the Western Desert of Western Australia. The campuses - while separated by large distances - are bound together by the culture of people from groups including Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara, and Pintupi. The Executive Principal will lead a dynamic school team to facilitate Ngaanyatjarra students and staff the capacity to thrive within their community as well as broader Australian society.

The school is committed to embedding the values and actions of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework across all aspects of school management, teaching and learning. The Ngaanyatjarra Lands School has clear, agreed directions around an approach to curriculum, student well-being and engagement. This includes integrating the Western Australian curriculum with Ngaanyatjarra culture and language. To this end, we are seeking a leader who will actively support the directions of the school with the central ethos of targeted learning and the development of expertise within two-way teaching teams. The focus for secondary education is based on Big Picture Learning which incorporates a student-focussed approach. It requires staff to actively seek opportunities for students and collaboration with community agencies. Integral to this work is a capacity to engage genuinely with the local Indigenous community and families with a view to progressing a common view of education and facilitating local leadership. The thread through all of our work is the commitment to on-country learning and learning on-country.

As a professional and experienced leader, the successful applicant will have much to offer to stakeholders with whom they interact. The capacity to be flexible and to learn new skills are also requirements. The Executive Principal is an active participant in the respective communities which constitute the school and will seek to develop an understanding and appreciation of language and culture within and between each community.

The Executive Principal leads and works with the school leadership team to engage in the development of whole-school vision and strategic direction, and help campus leaders to develop campus-based operational plans to ensure the local implementation of the school’s key strategies. The Executive Principal will be required to continue school’s current priorities, strengthen them and take each to a new phase of maturity and sustainability. This is complex work. The past four years has seen the school face a number of challenges – COVID, staff and leader turnover and more recently significant teacher shortage. Each of these challenges has at times curtailed activities the school had previously put in place thereby reducing the possibilities for student learning. In turn this has impacted on the lives of the leaders and teachers. The successful applicant for Executive Principal of NLS has a unique opportunity to reset this work in the school and through connecting with the community enhance the aspirations and outcomes for students.

About Us

The Ngaanyatjarra Lands are situated in the east of Western Australia covering some 250,000km² (about the size of Victoria) located west of the conjunction of the Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia borders. Approximately 2,000 Aboriginal people live in eleven communities that comprise the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. The population of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands includes the waves of people who came out of the Western Desert in the 1930s and the 1960s. The Ngaanyatjarra people have never left their country, nor has their land been annexed or occupied by outsiders. The predominant language spoken is Ngaanyatjarra though in some places people speak Central Desert dialects of Pitjantjatjara (in Wingellina) and Pintupi (in Kiwirrkurra). The Aboriginal people in the Lands maintain very strong links to their traditional culture, land and kinship patterns.

Ngaanyatjarra Lands School is a unique Western Australian public school and is probably the most remote school in the State. Its structure as a multi-campus school poses particular challenges in delivering a consistent high quality educational experience for students from nine Indigenous communities in the Western Desert.
