School of Alternative Learning Settings (SALS) is seeking two (2) dedicated Program Coordinators - Operations to their leadership team in Padbury. The Program Coordinators will lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team located in the metropolitan area with a key focus on operationalising our key strategic directives in partnership with our Associate Principals, Lead School Psychologist and School Psychologist team.

We currently have the following positions available

  • 2 x - permanent full-time positions

All positions will commence Term 3, 2023

If you are an experienced school leader looking to implement and embed whole school practices across a diverse context, then this role is for you. You will have the opportunity to work with our sites across the metropolitan area as well as leading practice across our whole school which now has 12 operational sites around the state in each educational region.

The SALS program commenced at the beginning of the 2022 school year after a successful pilot program that operated from 2019 - 2021. The SALS program targets a specific cohort of students who have demonstrated signs of physical aggression and would benefit from a short-term, intensive intervention program. Many of SALS students are referred via the exclusion pathway. The SALS delivers specialised activities and learning programs that build students’ social skills and self-regulation in environments designed to effect positive and lasting change in their behaviour. Its program has the capacity to provide access to specialists such as paediatricians, clinical psychologists, or consultation with psychiatrists.

The SALS is part of the network of specialist schools that operate under the Statewide Services pillar of Service Delivery. Our main school office administration is located at the Statewide Services centre, in Padbury. This role has the ability for you to have dual headquarters north or south of the river as you will provide site-based support across these sites. You may also have the opportunity to provide operational direction with other program coordinators at our regional sites.

Each setting accommodates up to 10 students who are provided with an intensive, individualised program of support while they continue their education. There is a strong focus on developing students’ social skills and ability to self-regulate. Learning and engagement is flexible, co-designed with students, culturally responsive and supports self-determination and interpersonal connection.

The role of the Program Coordinator is essential to coordinating a responsive and effective model of onsite student support that is aligned with the Alternate Learning Settings (ALS) model of program and service delivery. The successful applicant will lead a team of teachers and allied professionals, to deliver a responsive social and emotional learning program that supports students’ engagement and ultimately leads to successful transition back to the student’s enrolled school. The Program Coordinator should draw on their interpersonal acumen to provide educational leadership, coaching, and mentoring to SALS staff to continue to build their capacity to ensure coordination of wrap-around services and support is undertaken in collaboration with the referring school, parents, and relevant agencies that result in success for the student.

You will ideally have skills in maintaining professional boundaries while adopting a student-centric approach that aids in contributing to positive student outcomes. Your high-level communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong community and education partnerships will be essential. In addition, you will ideally be able to display skills in leading whole school pedagogy and systems that are culturally responsive. You may also be involved in student referral and intake processes including engagement with families. Knowledge of student pathways and transition will also be desirable experience in this role. In collaboration with the Principal and members of the executive team you will have the opportunity to inform strategic planning, leading the school vision, core values and guiding principles to embed practice.

SALS staff believe in a collaborative team environment, sharing common goals and resources in supporting students, schools, and parents. In collaboration with the Associate Principal, the Program Coordinator will offer support to existing professional learning communities and look for opportunities to inform new teams based on our strategic direction and so all staff have the opportunity to contribute to our growing school.  You may also be required to teach at sites within this role.

All functions of Statewide Services support successful outcomes for all students. This is achieved through a focus on better integration of services with schools, students, families, and external service providers; supporting schools and networks of schools to deliver high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom; and creating expanded opportunities for students to develop the academic, personal and social competencies they will need for participation in the workforce and society of the future.

The successful applicant may be required to travel, within the Metropolitan and South West Education Region, across our school to support regional sites and engage in professional learning, including overnight stays and air travel. Thus, this role will may require the successful applicant to hold and maintain a valid WA driver’s licence.
