This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2023 

South Kalgoorlie Primary School is seeking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic Student Support Officer (SSO) to join their highly effective Student Services Team.

About the Role

The successful applicant will work as part of the Student Services Team to provide pastoral care support to students (both individually and in groups) in a range of settings, encouraging student attendance and achievement at school through providing an environment that nurtures the emotional, physical, academic, and mental health and wellbeing of all students within a cohort. Our students’ wellbeing is of the utmost importance to us. As a Student Support Officer, you will also be responsible for developing intervention strategies which provide a responsive and effective support system for students.

The SSO will be responsible for developing links between students, family, and the school and as such, knowledge of the youth sector and associated agencies is desirable, as is experience as a youth worker/Student Support Officer. The successful applicant will ideally be able to work independently as well as collaboratively and be able to prioritise to ensure tasks are completed within set deadlines or as directed. Experience with high level precise record and note taking to document this is also highly desirable.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
  • Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
  • Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
