Shenton College Deaf Education Centre (DEC) is seeking to establish a pool of Teachers of the Deaf for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2024.
These teachers will be responsible for delivering learning programs tailored to meet the educational needs and preferences of individual students, which include both academic and vocational pathways. Literacy, numeracy, and communicative competency are priorities at Shenton College DEC, as well as the development of the student as a whole person empowered to take their place in society.
Suitable applicants will guide students by designing a learning environment that is supportive, stimulating, and fosters independence. Through a range of formal and informal assessments, you will identify learning needs and select evidence-based interventions to address these needs. Teaching can occur in collaboration with mainstream classes, or via small group support in the Deaf Centre. An aspect of this position may also be to deliver Auslan as a Language. Suitable applicants will ideally possess flexibility, teamwork, and a collaborative approach as they will be required to work in a specialised support team as well as with Shenton College staff.

- Teacher of the Deaf qualification, or current enrolment in approved course.
- Fluency in Auslan or enrolment in approved course.
- Experience with modifying and differentiating curriculum.
- Experience with VET Pathways.
- Strong knowledge of IT as an educational tool.
- Specialised language and literacy intervention training.
- Specialised numeracy intervention training.
- Training and skills in responding to mental health issues in students.
- Knowledge of audiological equipment and appropriate use.
- Prior connection to, or involvement with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Shenton College DEC is a secondary school co-located on site with Shenton College. This is a unique situation where Shenton College DEC is a separate school but operates without geographical boundaries within Shenton College. Shenton College DEC has formed a working relationship with Shenton College to develop an inclusive program to best meet the needs of each student. We are pleased to share a collocated learning environment with one of the top public schools in the state.

Access to the curriculum is provided via Auslan and English with an additional focus on supporting the use of audiological equipment where appropriate and necessary. ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course.
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment.
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
