Swan View Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool of proactive Education Assistant - Special Needs appointments for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2024.

Suitable applicants will be responsible for assisting in the delivery and assessment of planned education programs and therapy programs and have the capacity to implement and evaluate a wide range of strategies as part of a students' Individual Education Plan (IEP). As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will ideally have the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and possess good written and oral communication skills that will aide you in building and maintaining strong working relationships within the school community.

Swan View SHS caters for high school students with mild and moderate disability in the Education Support Centre as well as the mainstream campus. As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will support student learning across the school as required, ideally you would possess knowledge and experience that includes working with students with an Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and mental health. Sound technology skills, strong use of individual initiative and good behaviour management skills with be considered advantageous.

Swan View SHS is located in the foothills of Perth close to John Forrest National Park. It was opened in 1977 on an 11.6-hectare site. The school draws students from areas of the Swan Valley, Swan View, Stratton, Middle Swan, Bellevue, Koongamia, Midvale and attracts a number of students from the Hills suburbs of Greenmount, Glen Forrest, and Helena Valley. This provides the school with a diverse and capable student population with a powerful sense of community. The school is inclusive with strong links to local Aboriginal community and culture.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.

 

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
