Goldfields Education Region
Ngaanyatjarra Lands School: Warburton Campus
Deputy Principal
00030315
Level 3, $125,850 - $137,715 per annum (SEA GA 2021)

Advertised Vacancy Number: SS/DP821238

This is a twelve (12) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 3, 2023

Are you ready to explore new territory?

Ngaanyatjarra Lands School is seeking a devoted and committed Deputy Principal to join their team to help prepare its students to live a good life on the Lands, to be future leaders and develop the skills and knowledge to live successfully in ‘mainstream’ Australia if that is what they want to do.

It is highly desirable for applicants to have experience or knowledge of Collaborative Teaching Practices, Instructional Leadership, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), CMS and Trauma Informed Practice. Applicants with the ability to manage Information and Communications Technology (ICT) within a school setting will be viewed favourably.

The Deputy Principal will work closely with the leadership team and Principal to complement existing successful collaborative and reflective processes which are driven by student improvement. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential as are effective leadership skills for the implementation of School Plans and Department of Education (DoE) initiatives.

In 2007 the (then) schools dispersed throughout the Ngaanyatjarra Lands were federated into a single institution. They became campuses of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands School operating under the leadership of an Executive Principal. This was done to enable them to develop a strategic framework and to work collaboratively, share resources, and better address the disadvantages that can arise from their geographic isolation. The School now comprises nine campuses spread across the Western Desert of Western Australia and provides for students from kindergarten to Year 12. Although the campuses are separated by large distances they are bound together by the culture of the Ngaanyatjarra people.

Like many remote Indigenous schools the major challenge is to improve the attendance levels of students. Considerable effort has been put into ensuring a close relationship between the various campuses and their respective communities and on ensuring that students experience a safe, welcoming and stimulating learning environment while at school.

There is a whole school approach to the professional learning of staff with a central focus on supporting staff to address the needs of students whose first language is not English. There is also a focus on developing a common set of strategies, and shared language, to manage students in classrooms and to expand the range of effective classroom practices. This is based on the Department's endorsed programs: Classroom Management Strategies (CMS) and Instructional Strategies (IS).

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Applications will be assessed against the work related requirements of the position. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.

The Department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and persons from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.
