The School of Special Education Needs: Disability (SSEN:D) is seeking to establish a pool of Lead Education Assistants - Special Needs (EAL), for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2024.  SSEN:D is seeking experienced, committed and collaborative people to work in our team.

SSEN:D is one of seven specialist schools within Statewide Services and operates within a federation of four schools including School of Special Education Needs: Medical and Mental Health, the School of Special Education Needs: Sensory and the School of Special Education Needs: Behaviour and Engagement, to coordinate support for schools where possible and to share resources and expertise.

SSEN:D seeks to make a valued contribution to education through the provision of evidence-based strategies and practical support for students with disability and learning disabilities. Our team of Consulting Teachers work throughout the state, and support includes individualised student support, whole school consultancy, development and delivery of professional learning and the creation of online resources and information. Our school mission, to build the capacity of schools to ensure every student with a disability is a successful student, is at the heart of what we do.

As EAL, the suitable applicants will work collaboratively with Consulting Teachers, to model and coach evidence-based interventions to school staff where SSEN:D is supporting individual and whole school requests for assistance. They will be responsible for assisting Consulting Teachers to deliver planned education programs and demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to be able to successfully participate within a team situation, working alongside school staff, School Psychology Services and external agencies, often within a high-pressure environment, to assist with problem solving, decision making and choosing methods and processes to achieve outcomes. The suitable applicants will also work independently of the Consulting Teacher to provide direct support to students and staff.

They will ideally display an excellent understanding of supporting students with a disability using evidence-based strategies and interventions. As EAL, the suitable applicants will consult with other Education Assistants to develop strategies which address issues that assist teachers in providing care and educational programs for students. They will assist in coordinating, collecting and reporting data that will assist in determining outcomes for students.

Suitable applicants will work closely with Consulting Teachers and Program Coordinators and will be based at either our Padbury or South Lake hubs, dependent on business needs. Travel throughout the State to support students and schools forms an essential part of this role. This will include some overnight stays.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of the delivery of education programs and/or behaviour management plans; and ability to identify problems and assist teachers and other Education Assistants in the development of strategies and solutions.
  • Well developed oral communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead, mentor, coach, induct and train other Education Assistants and professional teams, including providing advice and evaluating education programs.
  • Well developed written communication skills, including report writing, and the ability to coordinate, collect and present student data at a whole school community level in a meaningful way.
  • Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to coordinate staff rosters and relief to assist in the delivery of effective education programs.
