Kelmscott Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dedicated Senior Gardener – Handyperson to join their school.

As the Senior Gardener - Handyperson, you will be responsible for maintaining and presenting our school grounds in a clean and tidy condition. To be successful in this role you should be confident in performing minor repairs and performing all duties using safe work practices.

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, uses initiative, works efficiently when unsupervised and is proactive in their approach to both gardening and general maintenance. Applicants with strong gardening and handyperson skills, to ensure our buildings and grounds are maintained at their current high standard, are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant should have good interpersonal and communication skills to maintain accurate gardening records. They should have strong leadership skills to supervise the tasks and workload undertaken by our Gardener and provide advice and support to the Manager Corporate Services on School grounds and maintenance matters.

You will ideally have a passion for the outdoors and an ability to lead staff, as you work with team members to create and maintain a clean, tidy, safe, and enjoyable outdoor environment for staff, students, and the community. It is highly desirable for the successful applicant to be familiar with Department of Education Gardener guidelines.

Located in the foothills of the Darling Scarp, Kelmscott SHS aims to ensure every student becomes a confident and successful learner capable of achieving their own educational goals as we prepare them to meet the challenges of the future and become positive contributors to their community. Eligibility and training requirements 

Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

And complete the Department’s:

  • Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
  • Induction program within three months of commencement
  • Introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
  • Training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • Training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
