Appointment Pool
Are you looking to make a positive difference in your community?
Meekatharra District High School (DHS) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated and passionate Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2024.
The role of the AIEO is to improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Islander students by ensuring they receive the educational and cultural support they need to feel welcomed, respected, understood and cared for and providing the skills to achieve academically to the best of their abilities.
AIEOs assist and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those at risk, through mentoring and pastoral care to ensure their participation and achievement in the school environment. AIEOs make an important contribution to student progress and achievement through the development and maintenance of positive relationships between staff, students, parents and the community. They facilitate school and family connections and work closely with students to support student wellbeing, attendance, and engagement.
Meekatharra DHS is a close-knit, relaxed, and friendly school. We have a population of children from interstate, other parts of Western Australia (WA) and the 'Meeka locals' which creates an environment that is rich in diversity and opportunities to learn from each other. Meeka is a resilient community, rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
Our outstanding team of Teachers, Aboriginal Education Workers, and experienced Education Assistants, who very much value working collaboratively, put in a huge effort to deliver creative and inspirational lessons for our students from Kindergarten to Year 12. More than 90% of our students are Aboriginal, so the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is at the centre of our decision-making for students and families.
We understand the importance of a safe and supportive working environment, and the impact this has on staff and student wellbeing. Our relatively low student numbers allow our quality and passionate staff opportunities to individualise the curriculum to meet the children’s needs. We are passionate about providing the best possible education for the children of our community and are charged with preparing our students for a diverse range of futures.
Our school values our positive community relationships, including those with families, community organisations, educational institutions, and local industry. We foster positive relationships with key stakeholders through active communications with families to encourage participation in school events. Positive relationships are at the heart of everything we do here at Meekatharra for our students and staff alike. We encourage student learning through community relationships by engaging with community partners to align student learning with real world opportunities.
