Appointment Pool
Merriwa Education Support Centre (ESC) are seeking to establish a pool of Teachers - Education Support for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year.
Merriwa ESC caters for primary aged children with a diverse range of disabilities, intellectual and physical, and aims to provide purposeful and relevant programs that address individual student need. An outcomes focussed curriculum is delivered in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment to ensure the development of functional life skills while fostering independence and confidence which support the individual towards meaningful participation in their community.
Passionate and dynamic teachers who are highly skilled with the ability to utilise a differentiated curriculum to accommodate the varied and complex needs of students with disability should apply.
Suitable applicants should possess the ability to develop, implement and assess engaging relevant integrated curriculum experiences that cater for individual student learning needs. A sound understanding, extensive knowledge and experience in utilising explicit teaching strategies to support student achievement is an important component of this role. You should also be able to use a range of assessment and reporting methods that show student achievement in relation to learning outcomes.
Merriwa ESC has a strong team of educators who work collaboratively to ensure students become independent learners. An ethos that is supportive of students and their families living with a disability, or learning disorder, is vital. Candidates should have a sound knowledge of how kids learn literacy and numeracy and an understanding of effective, evidence based instructional strategies to realise positive outcomes for students with disabilities.
Knowledge and experience with Australian Curriculum, ABLEWA, Kindy Guidelines, Early Years Framework and Purposeful play-based learning are highly regarded in order to facilitate our whole school curriculum practices in numeracy and literacy. Experience with the use of Special Education Need online reporting (SEN) and IEP documentation, Team Teach, Applied Behaviour Analysis, TEACHH and strong behaviour management skills are important for successful teaching practices at Merriwa ESC. You will ideally work collaboratively with colleagues to participate in team planning and curriculum policy development.
Teachers should establish and maintain effective relationships with Education Support and Mainstream colleagues and actively lead and support a team of Education Assistants to ensure high quality, effective learning experiences for all students on the Merriwa campus. Also important is the ability to collaborate with external agency representatives to support positive outcomes for students.
Experience in teaching students with Autism, dealing with challenging behaviours and understanding how communication impacts on students with a disability are highly regarded skills for this position. To be suitable you will ideally be knowledgeable about a range of disabilities including Autism. You should be committed to excellence in teaching, have good classroom management skills with the ability to manage students with challenging behaviours.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):
- Professional knowledge;
- Professional practice; and
- Professional engagement.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment.
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course.
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
