This is a nine (9) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2023 with possible (12 months) extension and/or permanency.

Baldivis Secondary College (SC) is seeking to appoint a dedicated Education Assistant- Special Needs to join their Specialised Learning Program - Autism.

We are looking to appoint an Education Assistant – Special Needs with a positive and caring outlook, with the enthusiasm to work as a valued team member, as well as independently when necessary. The successful applicant should possess the ability to build quality relationships with students.

The successful applicant will ideally have experience in working with high school students with special needs, in particular Autism Spectrum Disorder and severe Mental Health Issues. Experience in the development and delivery of supported educational programs, ability to understand and help students in all subjects across the curriculum, experience with delivery of Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN), good behaviour management skills and working with students from diverse backgrounds would be highly desirable.

Our primary focus is to develop a safe, supportive learning environment where students can maximise their opportunities to meet their educational goals and reach their individual potential. We cater for students with disabilities aged 12 to 18 years. All of our students are integrated into mainstream classes, although some are catered for with specialised educational programs, both within and outside the college.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

  • complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
