Are you a passionate and talented secondary teacher who has a high standard of teaching ability and a strong commitment for improving the educational outcomes of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Coodanup College requires a full time secondary teacher to deliver Specialised Learning Programs (SLP) to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to access mainstream education.

The successful applicant should adopt evidence-based practice and pedagogy to meet the needs of students with ASD without a diagnosed intellectual disability. Knowledge of, and ability to, apply Western Australian curriculum is highly desirable. You will move between the specific role within the Specialised Learning Program for Students with ASD.

In collaboration with the SLP-A Coordinator, teachers will provide innovative and engaging classes for our students and contribute to their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing.

Teachers in this program develop highly personalised learning plans to facilitate access to age-appropriate curriculum. They apply evidence-based individualised education interventions to improve the academic engagement, organisational skills, social thinking, peer relationships and self-regulation skills of students in the program.

The successful applicant will ideally possess excellent interpersonal skills and an unwavering commitment to enhancing the ‘school experience’ for students with a diagnosis of ASD who have the potential to achieve academic success in mainstream schooling and beyond.

Coodanup College is a co-educational public college which is located 80km south of Perth in the beautiful, coastal City of Mandurah. Catering for Years 7-12, we aim to instil ambition and drive in our students throughout their six years at Coodanup, supporting them to gain confidence in their abilities.

Our programs are designed to inspire and encourage students to strive for personal achievement and take healthy risks in order to reach their goals. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements in relation to teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder without a diagnosed intellectual disability:

  • Apply evidence-based pedagogy for improving student outcomes relevant to the WA curriculum
  • Knowledge and/or a commitment to participate in relevant training in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), positive behaviour support and a range of evidenced-based teaching practices to improve student outcomes
  • Monitor, review and report on the performance of students by creating individualised learning plans, maintaining relevant, rigorous and valid programming, data collection and reporting systems
  • Efficiently deploy resources and manage a team of education assistants to ensure program fidelity
  • High level interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues, parents, students and the school community

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
