The School of Special Education Needs: Sensory (SSEN:S) is seeking to appoint a dedicated School Psychologist to join their team.

The school provides educational support for children with hearing loss, vision impairment or dual sensory loss from birth to completion of school. SSEN:S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.

SSEN:S operates the Deaf Education and Vision Education Programs to support eligible children, their schools, and families. Within these programs, SSEN:S supports young children from birth to completion of school with the SSEN:S Early Childhood Services (0-4 years) or in their local schools with the Visiting Teacher Services. SSEN:S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, braille transcribers, Deaf education officers, captioner and educational interpreters.

The SSEN:S School Psychologist will capacity build, share expertise and empower Sensory staff and families in the impact of sensory loss. Working collaboratively, the SSEN: S psychologist will review and provide advice to maintain optimal learning interventions, engagement, and educational outcomes. The SSEN:S School Psychologist will provide evidence-based professional learning and psychological consultancy services to families and schools, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships to improve student outcomes. Collaboration, integration and coordination with relevant stakeholders and other specialist teams within and external to the Department is essential and will be a key feature of the role.

The successful applicant will utilise effective change processes to analyse pertinent data, collaborate, communicate, critically reflect, and develop systematic and transparent plans to assist SSEN:S to make informed decisions about future service delivery. The SSEN:S psychologist will also be effectual in reviewing student data to provide consultation in complex case review, transitions, preventative mental health strategies, and level and focus of SSEN:S educational support and intervention. 

As the successful applicant, you will ideally have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills in addition to experience in student language and developmental delay, learning support, sensory loss, behaviour, and early years intervention.  Professional knowledge of Triple P program delivery and evidence-based social and emotional programs is highly desirable. The school delivers a comprehensive social and emotional program to build student and parent capability and confidence; therefore, a rich understanding of evidence-based social and emotional programs is necessary. 

As this position requires the ability to work independently as a psychologist, and is of a more specialist nature, you will ideally possess general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.

SSEN:S staff benefit from working in a cohesive and collaborative team environment, sharing common goals and resources in supporting students, schools and parents across a state-wide service. SSEN:S provides opportunities to work state-wide with the provision of current and regular professional learning events, an induction and mentoring program for new and returning staff, and the opportunity to work in an environment of best practice which encourages innovative input of ideas from staff.

The role may involve state-wide travel with overnight stays including long distance driving, some of which may be in remote locations. Successful applicants will be required to hold a current and valid ‘C' class driver’s licence. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment.   3. High level written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across the lifespan, Department personnel and inter-agency partners across a variety of contexts.
  5. Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.
