Duncraig Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistants - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year.

At Duncraig SHS, every child is able to develop their individual strengths, talents and passions and gain the learning skills required for a positive future in further education, training or employment.

As an Education Assistant (Special Needs) at our school, you will assist in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. You will work under teacher direction to support students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional and physical skills. This includes the operation of computers and digital technologies, and implementation of individual student or small group programs or demonstrations. You will also assist in the application of specialised education programs such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy programs, while assisting the teacher or therapist to support clear communication between them and a student. You should possess exceptional teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills to provide holistic support to students and teachers to create inclusive educational programs that accommodates the needs of students.

To be suitable in this role, suitable applicants are required to work under general supervision and guidance performing tasks that require limited discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes determined by the teacher. You will ideally engage in ongoing communication with families, through the class teacher or Learning Support Manager. In addition, Education Assistants - Special Needs will ideally have the ability to apply techniques, skills and knowledge of relevant principles and practices acquired through previous experience, on the job learning or relevant qualification. Successful applicants should display a commitment to building positive relationships with students, families, staff and the wider community.

Confident use of computers, relevant internet platforms and applications such as department email and SEQTA are highly desirable. Suitable applicants who are well organised and use their initiative to assist the teacher with general care and well-being of students with a variety of disabilities and/or learning needs are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duncraig SHS is situated in the north-western suburbs on the coastal strip 18km from Perth. We are a school of high standards where the care and progress of every child is our first priority. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
