This is a permanent part-time (0.5FTE) position commencing ASAP 

The Office of the Chief Psychologist sits within the Statewide Services division which provides the services and supports required by schools to enable student achievement, with a focus on those students and schools that need it most.

With responsibility for the strategic direction and quality assurance of school psychology services across the Department, the Office of the Chief Psychologist promotes professional standards, connection and alignment, system consultancy, workforce capability and operational requirements for the Department’s School Psychology Service.

In this key role you will experience opportunities to support leadership for the School Psychology Service, with a focus on cultural responsiveness, student mental health and wellbeing and workforce capability. You will facilitate, codesign and collaborate with lead school psychologists, schools, regions and Statewide Services, as well as internal and external partners, to develop and support initiatives to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of the School Psychology Service.

The Office of the Chief Psychologist offers opportunities for aspirant school psychologists to contribute to a number of exciting projects including:

  • Refining and communicating the role and scope of practice for school psychologists, brokering agreements and referral pathways with external agencies
  • Strengthening processes, resources and supports for effective school service planning and evaluation
  • Workforce planning, with a focus on building and maintaining a high-quality specialist service and a positive wellbeing culture
  • Improving systems for accountability and monitoring of school psychology service delivery.

Your expertise will be utilised across the Statewide Services and the system to provide strategic advice and consultancy around identified issues. The role requires strong conceptual and communication skills, a contemporary scientist-practitioner approach, ethical reflective practice and ability to work at a system level to provide high-level consultation, evidence-based assessment, case formulation and interventions.

You will be professionally accountable to the Chief Psychologist and your practice will be guided and directed by the School Psychology Service Competency Framework, Department policies and guidelines and the Psychology Board of Australia’s professional standards.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  1. Demonstrated high-level knowledge and experience in providing specialist consultation, evidence-based assessment and interventions at a system level.
  2. Demonstrated highly developed skills in applying specialist knowledge and the development and evaluation of contemporary approaches and interventions.
  3. Demonstrated high-level ability to communicate and clarify complex concepts, provide feedback and critical evaluation of the management of complex and challenging issues.
  4. Demonstrated high-level strategic leadership skills and ability to build capacity, influence systemic policy and undertake interventions and prevention programs and assist schools to formulate and implement responses to address identified outcomes.
  5. Demonstrated high-level experience in coordinating specialised support and in providing appropriate professional learning to a variety of audiences.
  6. Demonstrated high-level oral, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team and with a range of internal and external clients.

  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
