Arbor Grove Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Gardener-Handypersons for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2024. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencement within the 2023 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2024.

As our school Gardener-Handyperson you should have a passion for the outdoors and enjoy working to provide a suitable growing environment for soft and hard landscaping. Experience in the following areas is highly desirable: grounds and oval maintenance, native flora knowledge, reticulation knowledge, equipment maintenance, work both independently and in a team. Handyperson skills will be required for maintenance and small repairs and oval preparation for carnivals (line marking).

In this role you will be responsible for maintaining and presenting our school grounds in a clean and tidy condition and improvement of school grounds and facilities on a bushfire site. We are seeking applicants with effective communication skills to maintain accurate gardening records and provide advice to the Manager Corporate Services on school grounds’ maintenance.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in maintaining grounds and gardens, including turf management.
  • Experience in minor servicing of horticultural/gardening equipment and performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of gardening methods and procedures, including the safe use and storage of gardening equipment, materials and chemicals.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS 

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

And complete the Department’s:

  • Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
  • induction program within three months of commencement
  • introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
  • training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

The Department applies a ten (10) day breach period to this selection process.
