Willetton Senior High School (SHS) are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Ethnic for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year.
Suitable applicants should have the necessary skills and experience to support English as a Second Language (ESL) students through mentoring and pastoral care to ensure their participation in our school and achievement of their personal best as well as through interpreting and/or translating according to their specific needs and their parents or caregivers, members of the school community and teachers where there are communication difficulties.
Around 50% of Willetton students speak a language other than English at home and our multicultural ethos is a cornerstone of our school. You will assist teachers in the delivery of planned education programs, including identifying and representing educational and cultural needs of ESL students by providing advice on program content relating to the student’s first culture.
English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) is part of the Languages learning area and is studied as an alternative to mainstream English. Therefore, you will assist in the design, implementation and recording of individual or group education plans, in consultation with teachers, parents and where appropriate other professionals. In doing so, you will support the students’ learning across all Languages courses including EAL/D, French, Italian and Japanese, and overall literacy development.
The main focus of the role is to support students from EAL/D backgrounds to connect with the Western Australian curriculum. In addition to this you will assist in the implementation of case management programs, in consultation with teachers, parents and where appropriate other professionals, to support the development of our EAL/D at risk students.
Your role will include supporting the achievement and progress of all students and promoting inclusion of the range of cultures and languages of the school. Our inclusive practices for language learning and differentiated support for EAL/D students and their families contributes significantly to our school’s academic and social success.
Willetton SHS is one of the largest schools in Western Australia, drawing its student enrolment from diverse geographic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective oral communication skills and, where appropriate, written communication skills in a school community language other than English.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate and liaise with students, teachers and other professionals, parents, school community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs inclusive of ESL students.
- Ability to contribute to a team and provide multi-cultural direction in the development and evaluation of English language programs, language resources, and individual or group education plans reflective of diverse school communities.
- Ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing culturally and linguistically inclusive educational programs.
- Effective organisational skills that assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
- Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Checl;
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course; and
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
