The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Branch is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed Principal Consultant - Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning to join our team.
We are seeking culturally responsive leaders who are committed to equity, anti-racism and systems thinking. As a Principal Consultant - Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning, you will lead and influence organisational cultural change by building and strengthening the professional capability of Department staff to embed culturally responsive practices and mindsets into their work.

The Principal Consultant - Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning provides strategic leadership, and input into the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies, initiatives and approaches that strengthen the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of Aboriginal students. This includes influencing system strategy and system input into whole-of-government initiatives to strengthen outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people.
The successful applicant will provide high level, strategic advice on a range of complex matters, including local, state and national Aboriginal education priorities and initiatives. Applicants should have extensive experience working in a lead or senior policy/project role and demonstrated high level engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders.
Important to this role is providing Aboriginal leadership, advice and guidance to schools and Department staff, to support the provision of culturally responsive approaches and strengthened engagement with Aboriginal families, communities and organisations.
Who are we
The Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning Directorate leads and influences the development of cultural responsiveness across the organisation. Our objective is to ensure that the research, design, delivery and evaluation of policies, programs and services are informed by whole-of-government priorities including the Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy 2021-2029 and the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

- Demonstrated extensive knowledge and understanding of contemporary policies, frameworks and issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated high-level leadership skills in building organisational capacity to engage with Aboriginal students, their families, and communities.
- Demonstrated high-level oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to build and sustain productive working relationships within and between internal and external stakeholders, including community and organisational networks.
- Demonstrated highly developed written communication skills, including experience in the preparation of Ministerial responses, reports, correspondence, and guidelines.
- Demonstrated highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to develop, implement, coordinate, monitor and apply strategic thinking to achieve outcomes.
- Demonstrated highly developed strategic planning skills, experience in managing projects and ability to coordinate and deliver strategic outcomes.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Aboriginality is considered essential for this position under section 50D of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act.
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a valid Class C Western Australian Driver’s Licence
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete
- the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy.
