Aveley Secondary College (SC) has an opportunity to backfill the Head of Learning Area – Science role.
The successful candidate should have the capacity to provide educational leadership across the Science Learning area and broader school community. In collaboration with the school’s leadership team, the Head of Learning Area (HOLA) Science will ideally support the implementation of the college business plan and support the College’s pedagogical approach of Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI). This includes overseeing curriculum development to cater for EDI sequencing and lesson design as well as applying Classroom Management Strategies and progressive use of ICT in the classroom. Support and training is provided for these keys areas.
To be suitable for this role, the successful applicant should be responsible for developing and leading an effective team of teachers focussed on providing high quality teaching and learning through curriculum planning and lesson delivery model to suit the EDI context. They will ideally need to be flexible and open to adopting the pedagogical requirements of the “Aveley Way”. They will also ideally provide curriculum leadership and coordinate the planning, teaching, learning and monitoring of students to ensure a wide range of teaching and learning strategies.
The HOLA – Science should be an expert classroom practitioner with a passion for their subject and the capacity to build a culture of excellence in their Learning Area that supports the needs of all students. Their own professional practice will ideally demonstrate proven success working with all range of students from Years 7 to 12. The successful applicant should possess outstanding data analysis skills and the ability to apply this to improve student performance and achieve enhanced academic outcomes. They should be working to support and build staff capacity as well as developing a professional learning culture of college staff and across our networks.
The successful applicant will ideally have exceptional interpersonal skills, a person who always tries to excel and is able to move the learning area team to achieve great outcomes. Suitable applicants should have demonstrated knowledge of the Australian and Western Australian Curriculum for Science and the implementation requirements which accompany these along with strong knowledge of Reporting to Parents. Additionally, they should also have a demonstrated ability to build capacity to plan towards and support the delivery of Senior School Courses.
About the School
Aveley SC opened in 2018 with an inaugural enrolment of 251 students in Year 7. It will continue with an additional cohort each year until 2023 when it will have the full range from 7 to 12.
The College is committed to an ethic of excellence. There is a strong progressive and future focused approach in meeting student needs. Our aim is to prepare students with the 21st century skills of teamwork, collaboration, and creative problem solving. The College has an emphasis on engaging curriculum that has high levels of integrated technology embedded in lessons, opportunities for STEM and the Arts. The College utilises current research into teaching and learning and school improvement, which has led to the implementation of Explicit Direct Instruction as the College’s signature pedagogy and approach to curriculum planning. Although this is a mandated whole school approach, there is support and professional development for staff to build proficiency in utilising EDI for planning and lesson delivery.

Aveley SC has a diverse offering of Academy courses for students that operate as extra curricula options.
The College has state-of-the-art facilities including spacious general classrooms, dedicated Science labs, Cooking and Textiles rooms including a commercial kitchen, Sports Hall, playing courts and oval. There is an impressive Arts complex featuring a performing arts theatre, dance studio, visual arts studios, music rooms, media and photography facilities. The College also runs a dedicated Education Support Hub with specialist facilities and staff for students with high needs.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
