East Kimberley College (EKC) is seeking an innovative, team orientated Head of Department (HoD) - Mathematics and Science to join a highly motivated and committed team, strongly focussed on meeting the needs of local students.
As the successful applicant, you will be responsible for developing and leading an effective team of Maths and Science teachers focused on providing high quality teaching and learning. You will provide curriculum leadership and coordinate the planning, teaching, assessing and monitoring of student data to ensure best practice education across the department. Within the Explicit Instruction pedagogy, you will be expected to train and develop your teachers and support staff in utilising a wide range of teaching and learning strategies to meet the individual learning needs of students.
The HoD - Mathematics and Science position will suit a vibrant person who ideally has exceptional interpersonal skills, who always tries to excel and is able to motivate the learning area teams to achieve great outcomes for students. You should be able to inspire staff, contribute to the school’s strategic and operational plans and build a culture of excellence in the learning area, catering for every student, every day.
As a school leader, you will ideally possess a high level of personal subject area expertise and a willingness to contribute to the development of subject expertise within your team. You should have a detailed knowledge of the Western Australian (WA) curriculum for Mathematics and Science and the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework. The successful applicant will also be required to oversee whole school numeracy programs and data, leading initiatives to enhance numeracy outcomes for all students at EKC.
As the successful applicant, your leadership skills will be used to enhance the social, emotional, and behavioural development of students through targeted intervention and the development of an expert teaching team. An excellent understanding of differentiated teaching practices and the ability to imbed Aboriginal perspectives into programs and classrooms to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is highly desirable.
EKC is a Kindergarten to Year 12 school, focused on providing an inclusive, safe, supportive, and connected learning environment to educate the 'whole child' to be a successful citizen of the future. Our belief is that “every student matters every day” and “every student can be a high achiever”.
EKC has a strong focus on Explicit Instruction and Positive Behaviour Support in the classroom. Teachers who are successful in gaining positions here will be expected to engage in the training provided and to implement the strategies in their classrooms. EKC is one of the largest Kindergarten to Year 12 schools in the state with approximately 900 students enrolled. With almost 50% of enrolments being indigenous, it also has the largest enrolment of Aboriginal students of any school in the State.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
