Cecil Andrews College is seeking to appoint a passionate and enthusiastic Head of Learning Area – Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) to join our team of quality staff. The successful applicant will drive the implementation of the school business plan and operationalise the school's priorities using a collaborative approach within their learning area.
The successful applicant will ideally have a focus on instructional leadership, be a creative thinker and have a willingness to lead change. With a large part of this role relying on you being able to build and maintain an effective team, strong communication and interpersonal skills are highly desirable. This position requires a dynamic leader who can motivate and manage staff, lead the development of an engaging curriculum and contribute to the school's strategic and operational plans through strong leadership, collaborative processes and extensive professional knowledge.
Our leaders embrace whole-school pedagogies with a specific focus on Explicit Direct Instruction and High Impact Instructional Strategies. The successful applicant will work with teachers to develop and support staff to enhance expertise in these areas, a willingness and capacity to learn are essential. The successful applicant should have strong curriculum knowledge, and they will assist the HASS team to build fine-grained curriculum programs, high-quality assessment tasks and facilitate moderation processes.
The successful applicant will be data responsive, they will have the ability to access data to review performance, plan intervention and differentiate curriculum programs. Cecil Andrews College provides exemplary education to children from Year 7 to Year 12. We provide programs to support a wide range of students, fostering pathways to university, TAFE (Technical and Further Education), further training, and the workplace. The college is well resourced and the commitment to fostering meaningful development opportunities between students, staff, and the community is well known and acknowledged within the district. In HASS there is growth in ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) and Senior School courses being offered which provides potential opportunities for the successful applicant. We currently offer ATAR Geography and Modern History and are moving to grow our general courses by eventually offering Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances, where this position becomes subsequently vacant, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
