Applecross Senior High School is looking for an innovative and experienced leader to work with the Principal, the senior leadership team and the school’s dedicated governing body as they shape the educational future of our students and meet the diverse needs of our school community. A high level of understanding of the latest Department strategic directions and initiatives and their successful implementation at the school level is a highly desirable attribute for this role. To be successful in this role the applicant will need a high level of emotional intelligence and an ability to work in a high pressure environment juggling multiple demands on their time. They will need a sophisticated set of positive people skills and be experienced in leading change initiatives in a large school environment.
Applecross Senior High School is a large, dynamic high performing school which caters for students of all ability levels. In 2023 our student population will be approximately 1850 with further growth expected in coming years. The school has a strong emphasis on pastoral care and has a dedicated team of professionals who work closely with students and parents to support the academic, emotional and social needs of our students.
The school offers a broad curriculum with a strong academic focus plus a range of vocational, sporting, artistic and creative courses to cater for our student’s diverse abilities and interests. The school values of mutual respect and personal best are explicitly taught and staff are expected to model these in all areas of their work. The successful applicant will augment the role of the Principal, representing the school in a range of situations. They will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the school and overseeing the internal and external self-review processes relating to all areas of school performance and related data. This will incorporate the oversight of the development and review of the school’s Business Plan, its milestones and targets and associated priority areas.
The role will have a significant focus on developing the capacity of our teaching workforce, middle leaders and Associate Principals, including oversight of performance development processes and staff wellbeing initiatives. Associated to this, the role will also have oversight of the Human Resources processes including the creation of the timetable and associated staffing functions.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs)
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
