Appointment Pool
Alkimos Primary School is seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants in our Specialised Learning Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The appointments may be permanent or fixed term, full-time or part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2022 school year and up to the end of Term 4, 2023. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022 school year, up to the end of Term 4, 2023.
In 2019, Alkimos PS began hosting a Specialist Learning Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This program supports the individual needs of students with ASD from Kindergarten to year 6 who attend primary mainstream schools, who are at risk of disengagement, underachieving and/or significant difficulties with adaptive behaviours. It is an intervention pathway to mainstream schooling.
The ability to be flexible, exercise initiative and work as part of a team will be highly advantageous.
Suitable applicants will support a Specialist Learning Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and should have considerable understanding, combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with Teachers and other Education Assistants.
Suitable applicants will support Teachers to implement evidence-based practice and pedagogy to meet the needs of students with ASD without a diagnosed intellectual disability in the program, as well as assist Teachers in mainstream classes.
In collaboration with Teachers, Education Assistants will implement highly personalised learning plans to facilitate access to age-appropriate curriculum. Under limited direction, Education Assistants will apply evidence-based individualised programs that improve academic engagement, organisational skills, social thinking, peer relationships and self-regulation skills.
Alkimos PS opened in February 2016 and caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school continues to develop a highly engaging and dynamic learning environment, where building relationships between students and community is key. Suitable applicants will be able to help in the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment and supervision of students in and out of class.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
- Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
- Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course.
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
