About the Role, Our School and Community in Meekatharra
Meekatharra DHS is a close-knit, relaxed and friendly school. We have a population of children from interstate, other parts of Western Australia (WA) and the 'Meeka locals' which creates an environment that is rich in diversity and opportunities to learn from each other. Meeka is a resilient community, rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
Our outstanding team of Teachers, Aboriginal Education Workers and experienced Education Assistants, who very much value working collaboratively, put in a huge effort to deliver creative and inspirational lessons for our students from Kindergarten to Year 12. More than 90% of our students are Aboriginal, so the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is at the centre of our decision-making for students and families.
We understand the importance of a safe and supportive working environment, and the impact this has on staff and student wellbeing. Our relatively low student numbers allow our quality and passionate staff opportunities to individualise the curriculum to meet the children’s needs. We are passionate about providing the best possible education for the children of our community and are charged with preparing our students for a diverse range of futures.
Our school values our positive community relationships, including those with families, community organisations, educational institutions and local industry. We foster positive relationships with key stakeholders through active communications with families to encourage participation in school events. Positive relationships are at the heart of everything we do here at Meekatharra for our students and staff alike. We encourage student learning through community relationships by engaging with community partners to align student learning with real world opportunities.
The school boasts a strong Information and Communications Technology (ICT) focus with iPads being used in all classes to develop 21st century learners. Our school bus is used frequently to offer a wide range of learning and sporting activities and opportunities for the children.
While having the option to explore the amazing countryside and waterholes locally during the weekend, Geraldton and Karijini are just a drive away and staff may drive to Perth for a long weekend or school holidays. The town has excellent facilities including a swimming pool, gym, squash courts, oval, Post Office, IGA, chemist, hospital, caravan park, museum, three pubs, three roadhouses, a golf club, rifle club and an airport with commercial flights run by Skipper’s Aviation. Most government housing is on one street, so a close-knit community has developed amongst the staff and a real sense of belonging exists.
The school has an excellent Graduate mentoring program and will develop you with training and skills in:
- Classroom Management Strategies
- Initialit
- Talk 4 Writing
- Top 10 Maths
- Trauma aware best practice
Opportunities exist to lead in areas that you are passionate about!
We will also consider an internal secondment opportunity for permanent teachers in other locations within the Department of Education who would like to work at our school for up to three years and retain their substantive position. If this interests you, please gain the approval of your principal before applying.
