Our school
Newman SHS is the Iron Heart of Education in the mining town of Newman in the Pilbara. Our vision and moral purpose is to educate and inspire students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. The Newman Way values of Care and Compassion, Respect and Responsibility underpin the way in which we work with students, families and the community. The school motto 'Iron Heart' represents the strength of character, resilience and perseverance we aim to develop. We acknowledge and respect the Nyiyaparli traditional owners of the land on which we learn and the Martu custodians.
We are proud to be an Independent Public School, with a strong School Board supporting the school vision and business plan. A number of partnerships and programs support and enrich the learning experiences for students. These include an innovative and engaging School Based Traineeship program in collaboration with BHP, local businesses and employers. The Follow the Dream Program provides support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
We are an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) school. This means in classrooms and lessons every day, each child practices the AVID Student Success skills which empower them to take ownership of their learning and proactively make their contribution to our community. AVID Student Success skills are specific skills that enable students to be prepared, organised and resilient. These skills are habits, behaviours and strategies that students can learn, strengthen and maintain throughout their schooling career.
The location and community
Newman, in the heart of the Pilbara, is your gateway to the adventure playground of Karijini National Park, with its epic chasms and pool-filled gorges. It's also where you can get up close to an equally awe-inspiring man-made spectacle - Mount Whaleback Mine, the world's largest open-cut iron ore mine. This welcoming mining and tourism town is 1,184 kilometres north of Perth - that's a short one hour and 45-minute flight or 13-hour road trip from the State's capital.
If you are a fan of sunrises and sunsets, you can catch fantastic views from Radio Hill Lookout, with walking trail access located behind the Newman Visitor Centre. In one word Newman can be described as an outdoor adventure paradise. Within just two hours, you can reach marvellous spots for 4WDing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, swimming and rock climbing. Awe-striking panoramas, natural rock pools, ancient rock formations and wildflowers - our region brims with unique, diverse and wildly coloured landscapes.
With its laid-back country vibe, Newman boasts all the facilities you'd expect of a modern town - a host of restaurants, bars, pubs and even the Pilbara's first golf course, making it an ideal base to explore and experience the Pilbara.
