The School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) is seeking to appoint a dedicated, strategic thinker who is culturally responsive and a committed Deputy Principal (Kindergarten to Year 6) to join our Leadership Team.
As an ideally experienced and high performing leader, you will work collaboratively with the Principal, Leadership team, Primary teachers, students, and their families, along with other SIDE school teams, other primary schools and agencies. You will have a deep understanding of quality teaching, learning, and assessment, reflecting on contemporary pedagogical practices and have the strength to lead the K – 6 staff in developing and delivering the directions that fulfil the Strategic vision of the school.
You should be able to model contemporary, high quality, and innovative teaching strategies, mentor, coach, and lead performance management with staff, mentor and coach staff as part of a culture of development and feedback. This also includes support classroom observations and ongoing feedback cycles. Relationship skills will be at the core of who you are. Our community expects our leaders to be driven by the moral imperative to make a difference to students no matter where they live or what their circumstances are. Your emotional intelligence, integrity, and willingness to engage in open, honest conversations with families and colleagues will enable you to build effective and meaningful relations with external agencies and community members.
SIDE provides education for Kindergarten to Year 12 students. The K-6 cohort is primarily students who may be travelling, home-based in an isolated region, living overseas or referred to SIDE because of special circumstances that impact on school attendance/engagement. Teaching and learning is conducted through a blended model of online, using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction and access to print content. The successful applicant will have a teaching role to be negotiated.
Experience in working with school psychologists and outside agencies and supporting students at educational risk is highly desirable, along with an extensive knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum, National Quality Standards and the Early Years Framework, Literacy and/or Numeracy leadership and STEM.
SIDE is located in Leederville with an off-site campus at North Lake and Canning College. Another campus at Clarkson Community High School will be operational in 2023. The expectation is staff are available to work at any site. The successful applicant may be required to travel within the State and stay overnight. A Western Australian driver’s license is essential.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Training
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
