Appointment Pool
Cannington Community Education Support Centre (CCESC) a specialist education support secondary school, is seeking to establish a pool of qualified Education Assistant – Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2023 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2023 school year.
CCESC provides specialist teaching and learning programs for students with disabilities and other high support needs. Our staff are specialists in the area in disability and work in partnership with parents and other stakeholders to provide the best support possible for our students. It is desirable for applicants to have experience working with adolescents who have a disability.

Suitable applicants will ideally have the ability to work independently and at times without supervision. You will ensure high quality outcomes for students by establishing positive, professional working relationships with students, staff, parents/carers, and other stakeholders.
In the role of Education Assistant – Special Needs, you will assist teaching staff in the delivery of planned education programs, including individual and/or small group programs. These programs will also cover learning areas in functional and personal care, social skills, academic and occupational, physio and speech therapy initiatives. It would be preferable to have extensive skills and knowledge in utilising Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including using computer software programs, tablets, and mobile phones to personalise learning for students.
Staff at CCESC recognise that young people learn best when they feel safe and heard. Sound knowledge in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and effectively being a communication partner is desired. Education Assistants will promote positive behaviour support strategies that assist students to develop their self-regulation in a variety or education and community settings.
Suitable applicants should be committed to putting students first and assisting teachers to implement instructional skills and strategies that maximise students’ engagement in their learning. They will work in teams to support the learning of students and to develop effective working relationship with students and stakeholders. Our staff proudly provide assistance to students with the upmost care, respect and dignity in all areas of daily living, including but not limited to toileting, meal time management, hygiene, transfer and positioning care.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
