Castlereagh School are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Student Support Officer to join their welcoming and supportive community.
The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience in a similar position working with children and adolescents with disability and complex and challenging behaviours; and be competent in maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a case management team is critical to this role. An applied experience in de-escalation, Co-regulation strategies, Trauma Awareness in Schools and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Strategies would be highly desirable.
The Student Support Officer will ideally have excellent interpersonal skills to quickly establish effective working relationships with children and young people, their families, and key stakeholders and will act in a culturally responsive and informed manner.

All students have complex communication and learning needs and are provided with a well-balanced educational experience with a literacy and communication focus. As effective communication partners all staff have their own Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) communication book and wear and use this throughout the school day. Staff use their PODD to have conversations, teach, interact with students and to support meaningful communication in everyday situations.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and collaborative with individuals across a range of backgrounds.
- Initiative and good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide strategies.
- Skills and experience in working in diverse settings with students and families with significant challenges and needs.
- Knowledge of positive behaviour support techniques

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
