Melville Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative and dynamic Science Head of Learning Area (HoLA), who is committed to achieving the best educational outcomes for our students.
The successful applicant will work as part of a dedicated team and have the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to our school community. They will work in collaboration with the Principal and members of the executive team to provide effective educational leadership across the school. The successful applicant should reflect on and assess the effectiveness of their teaching practice, promote an environment of active learning, and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential.
With effective interpersonal skills, the successful applicant will work closely with students, colleagues and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for students. The HoLA has an integral role in modelling exemplary practice and building the capacity of their team to ensure high standards for all.
The Science Learning Area offers a range of innovative teaching and learning programs from Year 7 through to a full suite of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and General Senior School courses. The successful applicant should be able to lead the delivery of quality teaching, learning and assessment programs, deliver the Western Australian Curriculum, Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Courses and display a strong understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
At Melville SHS there is a clear focus on high standards of student achievement. Systematic assessment and reporting procedures are carried out at the highest level, confirming performance and guiding the setting of future targets for the school. HoLAs have a key role in school planning processes including the analysis of student performance data, development of performance and improvement plans and application of an evidence-based approach to student performance.
Melville SHS is a vibrant multi-cultural school which aims to provide students with a world class educational experience. This is achieved through the provision of opportunities for intellectual, physical, creative and social development through high quality teaching and strong pastoral care relationships. The school offers students access to our highly regarded programs including an academic Gifted and Talented Selective Entrance Program. Melville SHS has Approved Specialist Programs in Aviation Studies, Graphic Design Media, and Netball in addition to a school-based merit-selected Academic Extension Course and Music in Focus program. We are also an Intensive English Centre and offer an International Fee-Paying Student program.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs)
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course;
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy;
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment; and
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
