Girrawheen Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dedicated and motivated Student Support Officer to join our Student Service Team.
The Student Support Officer will work collaboratively with the Student Service team to provide support to students and encourage positive engagement and achievement at school. The successful applicant will assist in supporting programs for individuals and/or groups of students, in particular our early morning Elite Sports Program, the school’s breakfast program, and under direction, support the organisation of key school academic, sporting, and cultural events and celebrations. At times you will be needed to support student learning in the Study Centre.
Under direction, the successful candidate will collaborate and conduct discussions with staff, parents/guardians, and the community to identify student absenteeism and truancy, and provide case information. You will maintain accurate information and record systems and communicate daily with the Head of Student Services. You will assist with the implementation of a range of school attendance strategies.
A key aspect of the role is to assist with proactive interventions to improve student well-being and provide support for students to help regulate their behaviour both inside and outside the classroom. An understanding of trauma informed practice and ASD would be an advantage. Experience with and a flair for working with young people is highly desirable.
The successful applicant will also establish and maintain communication and liaison networks within the school community and with other key stakeholders, and under direction, participate in crisis management and response duties as required.
A First Aid qualification and a bus licence would be considered favourably for this position

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to provide a professional, confidential service to a range of clients.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Experience in the use of computerised management information systems including database, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
- Effective organisational skills and experience in providing administrative support with the ability to manage conflicting timelines.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
