About the Role
We are seeking teachers who have outstanding interpersonal skills with a natural ability to communicate effectively and build genuine relationships with parents, students and staff members. Suitable applicants should quickly establish a positive and welcoming classroom environment with high expectations, and a growth mindset, while building students’ positive social and emotional skills.
We are also seeking staff who are flexible as it is a key professional attribute that will add additional value in all school communities and particularly in a regional school context.
Suitable applicants will ideally possess exemplary teaching skills, be highly motivated and hold themselves accountable to delivering best practice. You should have the ability to work in an environment characterised by whole school connected practice, collaborative team structures and a strong commitment to professional growth.
Ideally, suitable applicants will take advantage of high impact teaching strategies, and have proven experience in the planning and delivery of engaging literacy and numeracy programs with a particular focus on explicit instruction. A deep understanding of how to differentiate to meet the needs of all students will be highly regarded, as is the ability to use a variety of assessment tools to inform progress, enable constructive feedback and drive future planning at a classroom level.
We will also consider internal secondment opportunities for permanent teachers in other locations within the Department of Education who would like to work at our school for up to three years and retain their substantive position. If this interests you, please gain the approval of your principal before applying.
Our School
We value a safe, friendly and inclusive learning environment for staff, students and their families with respect to the strong cultural history of the Ngarluma people.
The opportunities for professional growth at our school are significant. As a school community, we place a high priority on investing in the capacity building of all members of our school team. Personal growth is a critical element for professional success in our culture, and suitable applicants should be committed to ongoing professional development to ensure alignment with school priorities and whole of school programmes. Our school decision making is collective and ‘authored’ by all members of the team. Therefore, our direction reflects the needs, aspirations, and ideas of all members of the school community.
Our school is an established and integral part of the small town community spirit that defines Wickham. Our staff are able to build solid relationships with students and parents by implementing our whole-school Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) program of High Expectations, Respect for all and Safety.
Working together with our wider community is at the heart of our school. Wickham PS collaborates with school committees, the Parent and Citizens Association (P&C) and the school council to improve educational outcomes.
The Location and Community
Wickham is located in the Pilbara, approximately 50 km north of Karratha, on the coast. The Pilbara offers a unique lifestyle, with beautiful turtle-nesting beaches, amazing waterholes and waterfalls, and opportunities to ‘get off the beaten track’. The community is also located close to a large, well-resourced regional centre. We’re also within reach of the Dampier Archipelago, and everything it has to offer.
Located in Western Australia's City of Karratha, Wickham is a fascinating historic town boasting pristine sandy beaches and excellent fishing spots. Wickham has become a prominent mining town with a population in excess of 1,600 people.
Notable attractions include the beautiful Boat Beach and the Port Walcott Yacht Club, situated near the town for excellent swimming and snorkelling. A boat ramp also offers fisherman the opportunity to get out in the water and try their luck. Enjoy fine views of the town and surrounding region from Water Tank Hill lookout. At sunset this stop provides a view like no other. Marvel at the huge 2.7 kilometre open sea wharf at Cape Lambert. One of the highest and longest open-ocean wharves in Australia.
