This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2022
The School of Alternative Learning Settings (SALS) is seeking to appoint a dedicated Program Coordinator in Broome, commencing Term 3, 2022. The Program Coordinator will lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team located in Broome.
The Alternative Learning Settings (ALS) program was originally established in early 2019 to target a specific cohort of students who had demonstrated signs of physical aggression and would benefit from a short-term, intensive intervention program. The SALS delivers specialised activities and learning programs that build students’ social skills and self-regulation in environments designed to effect positive and lasting change in their behaviour. Its program has the capacity to provide access to specialists such as paediatricians, clinical psychologists, or consultation with psychiatrists.
At the commencement of the 2022 academic year, the program has been consolidated as a stand-alone school. The SALS is part of the network of specialist schools that operate under the Statewide Services pillar of Service Delivery. Our main school office administration is located at the Statewide Services centre, in Padbury.
Several SALS sites located in the metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia (WA) are already operational, and a significant number of additional sites are being established over the next two years across the state. Each setting accommodates up to 10 students who are provided with an intensive, individualised program of support while they continue their education. There is a strong focus on developing students’ social skills and ability to self-regulate. Learning and engagement is flexible, co-designed with students, culturally responsive and supports self-determination and interpersonal connection.
The role of the Program Coordinator is essential to coordinating a responsive and effective model of onsite student support that is aligned with the ALS model of program and service delivery. The successful applicant will lead a team of teachers, student support officers, and school psychologist to deliver a responsive social and emotional learning program that supports students’ engagement and ultimately leads to a successful transition back to the student’s enrolled school. The Program Coordinator will draw on their interpersonal acumen to provide educational leadership, coaching, and mentoring to SALS staff to continue to build their capacity to ensure coordination of wrap-around services and support is undertaken in collaboration with the referring school, parents, and relevant agencies that result in success for the student.
You will ideally have skills in maintaining professional boundaries while adopting a student-centric approach that aids in contributing to positive student outcomes. Your high-level communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong community and education partnerships will be essential. In addition, you will ideally be able to display skills in crisis management and the development of personalised student de-escalation strategies. In collaboration with the Principal and members of the executive team you will have the opportunity to inform strategic planning, leading the school vision, core values and guiding principles.
SALS staff benefit from working in a collaborative team environment, sharing common goals and resources in supporting students, schools, and parents. In collaboration with the Associate Principal, the Program Coordinator will identify and broker appropriate support agencies and educational alternatives to support students excluded or at risk of being excluded. The Program Coordinator will lead and coordinate the involvement of services available at a system and local level. They will contribute to ensure quality support is provided for students and families in making informed choices about educational provision for their child, as well as work with school staff to develop pathways and transition support for students.
The successful applicant may be required to travel, within the Kimberley education region, across our school and to Perth for professional learning, including overnight stays and air travel. This role will also require the successful applicant to hold and maintain a valid WA driver’s licence. Initially for 2022, eligible teaching staff at the Broome SALS site will receive an approved Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARI) allowance of comparable value to allowances received by eligible teaching staff employed at other schools in the area. All functions of Statewide Services support successful outcomes for all students. This is achieved through a focus on better integration of services with schools, students, families, and external service providers; supporting schools and networks of schools to deliver high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom; and creating expanded opportunities for students to develop the academic, personal and social competencies they will need for participation in the workforce and society of the future.
