Byford Secondary College (SC) is seeking to appoint a highly effective and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our growing team.
As a Laboratory Technician you will, under supervision, provide support to teaching staff in the area of routine chemical and equipment preparation, and construction of simple apparatus for science classes. The successful applicant should possess good communication skills and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will ideally be well organised and able to work with high accuracy, combined with the ability to use your initiative and prioritise tasks to meet conflicting deadlines. Previous experience in an education science laboratory setting is desirable but not necessary.
Duties will include ordering supplies and equipment, managing stock levels and performing basic repairs and maintenance on the science equipment. Experience labelling and storing of laboratory chemicals, equipment and resources as well as knowledge of the appropriate methods for disposal of chemical, physical, and biological laboratory materials will be highly regarded.
Students are supported in their learning journey at all levels of ability within the Science Learning Area. The Science Learning Area provides an engaging and stimulating environment for students to learn the relevant components of the Western Australian Curriculum. It is integral to this role that the successful applicant will help to enhance the students’ learning.
Byford SC is an Independent Public School located approximately 30 kilometres from the Perth CBD, our College currently caters for over 1500 Year 7 to 12 students including students with disabilities with our specialist inclusion facilities. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Knowledge of general science to Year 12 level or equivalent knowledge or experience
- Organisational and time management skills and ability to work independently
- Good verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to use computers and a range of application software packages
- Knowledge of safe working practices, laboratory safety requirements and procedures and a willingness for further training related to safety

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
