If you have a yearning for adventure, join the Flying Squad. In my first year in the Squad I travelled 27,568 kilometres. I went East, South, North and West. It’s been amazing!
The staff back at head office look after you so well and the schools you are assigned to are so happy to have you that you are inspired to do your best work and help the students in your classes. You make great friends along the way - friends you keep across the miles for a lifetime.
– Christine Edgar, Teacher Flying Squad
RECRUITMENT POOL
Advertised Vacancy Number: DOE753612
Please note as of 3:50PM (AWST) on Wednesday, 8 June 2022 an amendment was made to the closing date.
Successful applicants will be employed in a 24 month, fixed term contract. After the successful completion of your two-year continuous service and probationary period, fixed term and graduate teachers will be appointed as a permanent teacher with the Department.
Applicants appointed from this process will be deployed to fill short term vacancies throughout the state.
We are seeking flexible, resilient teachers who can build positive and productive relationships quickly and easily with staff, students and the community.
As a flying squad teacher, you will fill short term vacancies in regional and remote schools. Often, these vacancies occur at short notice, with some requiring you to leave the following day.
Appointments will be for periods of one week or more, up to 10 weeks.
Early childhood, primary, and secondary teachers are encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from graduate, fixed term and permanent teachers who are available during the 2022 and 2023 school years.
As a Category 1 Flying Squad Teacher, you will be employed full time on a 24 month contract. You will also receive a $16,500 per annum allowance, paid fortnightly. The allowance is paid in lieu of any other allowances provided to teachers on the basis of the location of the school.
How does this flying squad pool work?
As part of our Teacher Flying Squad (Category 1) team, you will provide relief in schools across Western Australia. You will travel, as directed, to selected regional areas to fill short term vacancies.
You will be employed on a 24 month contract, and have a ‘base’ school in the metropolitan area, or large regional area, depending on your circumstances and preferences. This is where you will work between flying squad appointments.
As you may need to be appointed to a vacancy on short notice, you will not have your own class at your base school, or be part of the regular timetable. Instead, you will provide internal relief, or additional support at your base school.
You may be deployed on short notice and may be asked to work outside of your area of qualification for short periods.
Travel and accommodation are included during your deployments to regional areas. Due to the nature of the short term accommodation provided, it is extremely unlikely that pets can travel alongside you to each location.
Is this right for me?
Our Flying Squad teachers have success where they can quickly and readily engage students, have a strong curriculum knowledge, and use effective classroom management strategies. Your approach will be flexible and adaptive, with a practical mindset. Someone who can ‘think on their feet’.
You should be willing, and able, to travel on short notice and be comfortable settling into new surroundings.
If you are a current permanent teacher, you must first seek approval from your line manager to apply. If you are successful in being appointed to the pool, you will need to be released from your current role for the whole 24 month period. After this time, you will resume your position at your substantive school.

How do I apply?
This will be a two-stage selection process.
Stage 1
You must complete the online application, attaching a CV and statement of claim, demonstrating your competency - in the context of this role - against the Professional Domains from the AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These are:
- Professional Knowledge
- Professional Practice
- Professional Engagement
Please refer to the attached guidelines for further information on writing your CV and statement of claim.
You will be assessed on information provided in your CV and statement of claim. If you are competitive, you will progress to the second stage of the process.
Stage 2
In the second stage, you will be asked to record a video interview.
In this stage, the selection panel will also seek referee validation and comments. This information will form an important part of the assessment process. Please ensure you include the contact details for two work related referees who can verify the claims made in your application. Ideally, one referee should be your current line manager. If you are a graduate or beginning teacher, you may wish to nominate your practicum supervisor
Successful applicants will be notified of their inclusion in the recruitment pool following this second stage of the recruitment process.
Placement in the pool is not a guarantee of an offer of employment.
If you are assessed as suitable during this selection process, but not offered a position, you may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout the 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
