In 2012 Comet Bay College recognised the need to support the education of Gifted and Talented students in the early years K – 4 through the introduction of the Nautilus Club and subsequently the Nautilus Master Class for year groups 5 – 6. Through this early intervention initiative, provision for gifted students has enabled appropriate learning practices to be delivered to ensure that these selected students are able to thrive. We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced teacher to build upon the established Nautilus Club and Master Class programs.
The successful applicant should have skills and experience in working with Gifted and Talented students and possess the capacity to differentiate curriculum through compaction, acceleration, and use of higher order thinking skills and strategies. They should also be familiar with current trends and best practice in Gifted Education with the capacity to support the identification of students with high cognitive potential. Strong interpersonal skills will be advantageous to effectively communicate with parents and across our network of feeder primary schools.
The ideal candidate should have experience in developing and delivering high quality professional learning for colleagues regarding gifted and talented students and trends in gifted education. Additionally, the successful candidate will ideally have the skills to create opportunities and partnerships within the community to enhance student engagement, for example through competitions, excursions and programs like Subs in Schools.
Comet Bay College has a genuine and proven commitment to support the professional growth of our teachers. Each staff member has the opportunity to join the Advanced Instructional Intelligence Program (AIIP) and be provided with five days of professional learning to build teachers capacity in the classroom. The College is fully networked and has the latest wireless operating system enabling staff and students to be “connected” at all times. Comet Bay College is a Gifted and Talented school and also has extension pathways in English, Mathematics, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences in years 7 to 10.
The College also has a successful and highly competitive Australian Football Specialist Program. The Visual and Performing Arts also offer extension classes in Drama, Dance and Art to selected students in Years 7 to 10. We invest heavily in the social and emotional intelligence of our students through the years 7 to 9 REACH Program and our staff and are fully committed to developing resilient young people with a healthy sense of self-worth who value education and have the confidence to seek excellence in all aspects of their lives. Comet Bay College is a modern, innovative Independent Public School that caters for approximately 1780 Years 7 to 12 students and is located one kilometre from the coast in the vibrant community of Secret Harbour. The College boasts state of the art facilities that include specialist science laboratories, lecture theatre, fitness centre, metal fabrication centre, modern industrial food studio and graphics/mechatronics studio.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):
- Professional knowledge;
- Professional practice; and
- Professional engagement.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
- meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement; and
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
