John Curtin College of the Arts is seeking to appoint a motivated, innovative and ideally highly experienced Deputy Principal of Student Services.
In this role you will be required to lead, manage and build capacity in a large, dynamic and dedicated team devoted to the growth of student wellbeing and resilience, which we believe is fundamental to social, emotional and academic success. Pastoral care and academic achievement are embedded in all aspects of college life thereby building a culture of high care and high performance. The role is primarily responsible for leading Student Services, however the successful applicant could undertake other roles and responsibilities within the college as negotiated with the Principal.
The Deputy Principal – Student Services will hold an executive role in one of the State’s leading Independent Public Schools. You will work collaboratively with the Principal, Executive and Senior Leadership teams, staff, and wider college community to provide educational leadership, guided by the college’s Business Plan, and with a focus on achieving exceptional educational outcomes for Gifted and Talented Arts students. Your role and responsibilities are strategic and you will effectively lead and manage change in a large and complex organisation that has a diverse student population.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the leadership of whole college policies, processes, operations as well as the management of the financial, physical and human resources in your designated area of responsibility. You will assist the Principal to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, Department of Education policies and guidelines, and work collaboratively with the Executive team in a number of areas including improving staff performance and supporting whole college operations. Your leadership and knowledge will be applied to policy development and review within the Students Services context as well as college operations. You should have a passion for Student Services and display excellent leadership, management and organisational skills. Your innovative and strategic approach will maximise student engagement in learning and teaching, and create a positive school culture through developing and implementing programs that focus on improving the health, well-being, attendance of students and promoting positive relationships between students and staff.
The role of Deputy Principal – Student Services requires a high level of knowledge with regard to the Western Australian Curriculum and Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), of understanding of school operations and processes, including timetabling, student career pathways, Reporting to Parents, School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) policies and procedures (including WACE attainment requirements), School Information System (SIS) and Saron Education Quality Teachers Assistant (SEQTA). Extensive knowledge of pastoral care practice is desirable to coordinate case management and interagency cooperation to effectively address the needs of students in the areas of mental health, engagement and attendance. You should have a highly developed understandings of the academic, social and emotional needs of Gifted and Talented students across the intellectual and creative domains, in particular in the areas of social and emotional development, underachievement/underperformance, and twice exceptionality. Furthermore, you should have highly developed analytical skills in order to analyse data to profile cohorts, monitor and report on the effectiveness of programs and provide data for college accountability. You will provide leadership and professional development to colleagues on the findings of your data analysis.
Your collaborative skills will enable you to build partnerships and develop a climate of trust and confidence within the college community in order to promote the college’s values and priorities. The role will involve being a spokesperson and ambassador for the college, regularly interacting with all members of the college and wider community. You will idealy possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with relevant support agencies and services, and resolve sometimes difficult interactions with staff, families and students.

The Arts at John Curtin is as much about providing dynamic opportunities for all students (each year we produce over 100 performances/exhibitions) as it is about developing transferable life skills such as empathy, creative and critical thinking, collaboration and the ability to communicate, all important attributes for any future pathway.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
