The School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) is seeking a culturally responsive and aware, passionate, enthusiastic and highly motivated Manager Business Operations to join their friendly team.
As the Manager Business Operations, the successful applicant will work closely with the Principal, and be responsible for implementing sound, consistent management and budgeting practices and systems, reviewing current school financial practices, and implementing improvements. The successful applicant will ideally foster effective human resource management practices, and display strategic oversight and effective management of buildings, facilities, and assets at the school.
The Manager Business Operations leads the Administration Support Team, focussing on delivering improved outcomes for the school community, and sharing a strong team ethos and solutions focussed outlook. The successful applicant will oversee the business operations and work collaboratively with a team, embedding the school culture and ethos. Ideally, the successful applicant should be flexible and reliable, and have excellent conceptual, interpersonal, communication, staff management and problem-solving skills. An ability to build quality communication with all stakeholders will be highly valued.
SIDE is currently undergoing a significant change agenda in response to a review conducted in 2020. The Manager Business Operations will play an important role in this change agenda.
SIDE is the main centre for Kindergarten to Year 12 distance education and online learning. It provides quality education for students who for various reasons cannot attend classes in a mainstream school. SIDE is also a Registered Training Organisation, has a Distribution Centre and offsite campuses.
SIDE caters for Western Australian students who are:
- geographically isolated
- temporarily living overseas or travelling within Australia or overseas and not enrolled at a local school
- enrolled full-time in a registered dance/ballet school
- involved in elite performance including sport, theatre, and music
- school-based students whose local schools are unable to offer appropriate courses
- unable to attend regular school due to severe health conditions
SIDE offers the same educational opportunities and support as most primary and secondary schools, including support for students with a diverse range of needs. A feature of the student experience at SIDE is the support from teachers in all years, and our secondary student services team. We have a broad range of Year 11 and 12 courses, catering for all post-school destinations, including university, TAFE, private providers, and employment.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Highly developed skills leading, managing, and facilitating a team to deliver strategic business outcomes using sound customer service principles and practices.
- Substantial knowledge and experience in financial management and budget preparation and an understanding of the financial regulatory framework, including the Australian Accounting Standards, the Financial Management Act, tax legislatures and other relevant legislation.
- Highly developed human resource management skills, including the ability to develop and apply human resource management practices and systems.
- Substantial experience in the development, implementation, management and monitoring of strategic business, marketing, and operational plans.
- Highly developed written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, collaborate and negotiate effectively with a wide range of individuals at all levels.
- Substantial research, conceptual and risk management skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to strategic and complex problems and issues.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
