The WA College of Agriculture – Harvey (the College) is seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced Technical Officer - Agricultural Instruction (Workshop and General Farm) to join the team.
The Technical Officer - Agricultural Instruction (Workshop and General Farm) is responsible for a range of general farm duties including basic mechanical repairs and servicing of farm machinery and equipment and training students in these contexts. The role will necessitate assisting in other farm areas as seasonal demands dictate including, fodder conservation, fencing, and tractor operation.
The successful applicant will have experience in similar farming systems to the College and possess formal or informal skills in mechanics.
If not already held, applicants will be required to hold or obtain a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment within twelve (12) months of commencement, which the College will assist with. A VET qualification in Agriculture at Level 2 or Level 3 would be desirable.
The College assists staff to work through the Training Officer levels which provides a career pathway and scope for higher salaries.
All Technical Officer - Agricultural Instruction at the College share in weekend (typically equating to one day every third weekend) and after hours’ overtime for which they are paid 150 hours (or full time equivalent) of commuted overtime which equates to an additional 15% on top of the base rate.
The College is located about 1.5 hours south of Perth in Western Australia, 20 minutes from the coast and 40 minutes north of Bunbury. It is situated in the heart of the Harvey irrigation district which services the dairy and horticulture industries and enjoys access to a significant range of agricultural industry and recreational opportunities. The College is located on a 900ha farm run on a semi commercial basis. A number of major enterprises are run including beef, dairy and horticulture with students involved in all aspects of their operation. Students are also exposed and trained in smaller enterprises such as sheep, equine, pigs, poultry and meat processing.
The College is a co-educational facility providing education and training to students in Years 10, Year 11 and Year 12. As a specialist Agricultural and related trades training school, students attend from across Western Australia with the majority boarding on site. Students apply to attend the College with a genuine interest in the curriculum offerings being the main desirable attribute. As a result, students are motivated and engaged in their learning.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Experience and competency in supporting agricultural enterprises specific to the requirements of the college or school.
- Good written and oral communication skills with interpersonal skills appropriate for working with young people in an educational environment.
- Ability to provide a skill demonstration to others.
- Ability to work effectively without close supervision as a member of a team.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- If required to train and assess, hold or obtain demonstrated vocational competencies in the training being delivered as specified by the standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its successor.
- If delivering and assessing training, hold or obtain within twelve months of commencing employment the enterprise trainer and assessor skills set (or its successor) as required by the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its successor.
- Hold a current western Australian C-class driver’s licence and obtain as soon aspracticable 1 other Western Australian vehicle driver’s licences appropriate to be able to operate the range of vehicles in operation at the site.
- Obtain a current department of education criminal record clearance prior to commencement of employment.
- Obtain or hold a current working with children check;
- Complete the department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- Complete any training specific to this role required by departmental policy.
- Complete the department’s training in accountable and ethical decision-making within six months of appointment.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
