Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative and effective leader with outstanding interpersonal skills to fill the role of Head of Learning Area - Humanities and Social Sciences (HoLA – HASS) to join their leadership team.
As a key member of the School Leadership Team, you will contribute to the implementation of the school’s Business Plan through participative decision making, while promoting the school’s vision and strategic directions. It will be highly desirable for the successful applicant to have the ability to lead change, supported by their capacity to use evidence-based data to inform their decision making to implement innovation within the learning area.
You will work as part of a collegiate team and be solutions focussed. As HoLA – HASS you will continually drive improvement by providing proactive leadership that is collaborative, inspiring and supportive. The successful applicant will lead flexible and adaptive teachers who will apply differentiated instruction and explicit teaching across all year levels.
By leading a professional learning team, the HoLA will ensure that the HASS and Languages teachers develop consistent instructional practices that optimise student learning and engagement. The successful applicant will ideally lead reflective performance development discussions with staff, based on a comprehensive knowledge of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. This may be through coaching, developing an ethos of teacher self-reflection, feedback, data analysis and a review of summative and formative assessment practices. By facilitating the effective implementation of the school’s pedagogical framework, engagement strategies, classroom observation and student voice, you will also ideally model highly reflective practices as both teacher and leader.
The HoLA – HASS will ideally possess a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum and Senior Secondary Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Courses. Experience in the planning, development and delivery of both Year 7 to10 and Senior School courses is highly desirable. The successful applicant will also be responsible for leading and embedding the General Capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within teaching and learning programs.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
