Heathridge Primary School (PS) is seeking a Kindergarten/Pre-Primary Teacher to work in the early intervention classroom in the specialist learning program to support nine students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The teacher will adopt evidence-based practice and pedagogy to meet the needs of students with ASD without a diagnosed intellectual disability, whilst having knowledge of, and ability to, apply Western Australian curriculum.
At Heathridge PS we support students using Positive Behaviour Support, TeamTeach principles and the Zones of Regulation, so a deep and practical understanding of how this is embedded in your practice is highly desirable. The successful applicant should have the ability to look beyond behaviour to the deeper reasons and function of the behaviour and utilise “out of the box thinking” when planning supportive strategies.
In collaboration with the Program Coordinator (Autism), you will provide innovative and engaging lessons for our students and contribute to their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing to prepare them for mainstream public education. You will ideally have experience in developing, implementing and reviewing meaningful and appropriate Individual Education Plans that not only outline functional curriculum objectives but supports the whole child through targeted social-emotional skills, self-regulation and independence. Experience in using Discrete Trial Training, Zones of Regulation, Positive Behaviour Support, Independent Schedules, Functional Behaviour Analysis and Applied Behaviour Analysis is highly desirable. Knowledge of Special Education Need Reporting to Parents (SEN-RTP) and Abilities Based Learning Education, Western Australia (ABLEWA) is favoured.
The successful applicant will manage a team of Education Assistants to create a safe and supportive learning environment for students. They will engage with and contribute to the school community and work collaboratively with families, therapists, and outside agencies to improve student outcomes. The successful applicant should have a high level of skill and knowledge related to delivering evidenced-based interventions and programs based on the principles of explicit teaching, direct instruction and Applied Behavioural Analysis such as Discrete Trial Training. A commitment to participating in relevant ongoing professional learning and providing professional support to others is highly desirable. The successful applicant should display the ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively as a team member and maintain a climate of respect and fairness when supporting or liaising with members of the school community.
