The School of Special Education Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) is seeking a committed and effective leader to take up the role of Program Coordinator Engagement – Pilbara Region.
The Program Coordinator, in collaboration with the Principal and members of the administrative team, provides educational leadership in the school and the community by developing and promoting the school vision, core values and service principles. Under the leadership of the Principal and Associate Principal, the successful applicant will implement effective change strategies, and provide leadership across the school community to accept and develop opportunities for improved service in the area of student support services. The successful applicant will facilitate workforce effectiveness and provide a role model for self-development to improve professional performance and work autonomously as site manager for the Engagement Centre.
The Program Coordinator – Pilbara, is based in Karratha (Pilbara Regional Education Office) and oversees the management of services from sites in Karratha and Port Hedland. The successful applicant will be required to travel between both sites. The successful applicant will also be required to attend associated training and school development days in Perth as our main school site operates out of Statewide Services Centre in Padbury. This will involve overnight stays. Applicants will need to hold and maintain a current WA drivers’ license.
Program Coordinators in our context manage all policy, procedural, physical, financial, and human resource requirements at their individual sites, supported by the executive leadership team in Padbury. Our sites typically comprise of a school officer, school psychologist, engagement teachers, student support officers or education assistants, and may include a youth transition coordinator.
The Program Coordinator contributes to the development of the school plan through participative decision making, including assisting in developing policy, and establishing and maintaining systems. The role also entails establishing and managing administrative and operational systems in the relevant area of responsibility to ensure the effective operation of the school within departmental policy and guidelines.
Our Program Coordinators work in a culturally responsive and context specific manner to productively and respectfully engage stakeholders. The successful applicant will be responsible for leading specialist service provision across engagement centres, ensuring integrated service delivery across the Student Support Services under the Statewide Services pillar of Service Delivery. An outstanding ability to display innovative, bold, and creative solutions and a proven track record in working collaboratively to solve complex problems, are essential to this position.
The SSEN: BE provides educational support and services with schools for students demonstrating extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative support with schools for students is delivered through engagement centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of the engagement centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN: BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a State-wide model of support for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state.
Engagement Centres coordinate the K-12 provision of the following three services:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour.
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs.
- Intensive support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
- Capacity to manage physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
