Encouraging student aspirations and connecting them to life opportunities
We are establishing a recruitment pool of teachers for appointment to new Career Practitioner positions located in public secondary schools across Western Australia. These specialist teaching roles will support the career development of students and provide an exciting opportunity for teachers with an interest in student career pathways. Career Practitioners will work with school leadership teams and embed career development and work exposure activities into curricular and co-curricular programs.
Career Practitioners will be innovators and have the ability to work collaboratively across a school. They will implement programs and provide resources to embed career development across learning areas. We are looking for teachers that enjoy working with students to help them imagine and connect with their future career aspirations. Confidence to make decisions and enact necessary curriculum reform will be essential attributes for the role. Teachers in these specialist roles will also need to be competent in the interpretation and analysis of system and school-based data.
To be competitive for these roles, a high level of knowledge about the diversity of career pathways, with an understanding of school contexts in relation to local employers, community agencies and training providers is desirable. Career Practitioners are also expected to have strong communication skills and be able to liaise with and share information easily with students, staff, parents, training providers, employers and industry.
If you don’t hold a recognised Graduate Certificate in Career Development, you must be willing to complete a qualification - which will be funded by the Department. Time will be made available for successful applicants to complete the qualification, and study will be incorporated into the role in the first 12 months. If you already hold an equivalent qualification, recognition of prior learning may be possible.
Applicants that are appointed to a Career Practitioner position will be required to:
- Attend a two-day induction program scheduled for 2nd and 3rd December.
- Complete a Graduate Certificate in Career Development if you don’t already hold one.

Information for applicants
Applicants are encouraged to read the More about the Career Practitioners role document attached to this advert. This will help you decide if the role is right for you.
This will be a two stage selection process and you will need to demonstrate your competency - in the context of this role - against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):
- Professional Knowledge
- Professional Practice
- Professional Engagement
Stage One:
In the first stage, applicants will need to download and complete the attached CV and Written Statement templates. Instructions for completing the templates can be found within the documents.
The completed templates will need to be attached as documents to your online application - so they should be completed and saved prior to applying. Applicants will be assessed on information provided in their CV and Written Statement in this stage.
Applicants assessed as competitive in the first stage will be invited to the second stage of the process.
Stage two:
In the second stage, competitive applicants will be asked to participate in a further form of assessment.
In this stage the selection panel will also seek referee validation and comments. This information will form an important part of the assessment process. Please ensure you include the contact details for four work related referees in the template CV who can verify the claims made in your application. One referee should be your current line manager.
Applicants will be notified of their suitability for inclusion into the recruitment pool following this second stage of the recruitment process.
Appointments from the pool:
Applying for the pool and being assessed as suitable for inclusion does not guarantee appointment. Not all schools will appoint a Career Practitioner from the recruitment pool being established via this process. Principals may choose to appoint a Career Practitioner using other options such as local recruitment activities or advertising options.
The schools appointing a Career Practitioner by advertising and conducting their own individual recruitment process are listed in the attachment to this advert. These vacancies will also be advertised on JobsWA. If you are interested in a Career Practitioner role at one of these schools, you must apply directly to the school’s advertisement to be considered for a position at that school. Appointments to these schools will not be made via this process in the first instance.
These schools may however utilise applicants assessed as suitable from this pool process for vacancies that arise in the future.
You can indicate your interest in appointments to these schools by selecting them from the list available through the application process for this pool.
As these schools will not consider applicants from this pool in the first instance, you should also apply directly to the vacancy advertised by the school.
As vacancies arise, you may be contacted by schools to discuss details relevant to specific vacancies.
How to apply:
All applications must be submitted online. Select “Apply for Job”, at either the top or bottom of this screen and follow the instructions.
When completing your online application, you will be asked to nominate the schools where you would be interested in working as a Career Practitioner.
Please only nominate schools where you would accept a position.
