This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 4, 2021
The Alternative Learning Settings (ALS) is seeking to appoint a team focussed, dedicated and enthusiastic Associate Principal to join an established team in further developing the expanding ALS initiative.
The ALS was established in early 2019 targeting a specific cohort of students, those who have demonstrated signs of physical aggressions and will benefit from a short term, intensive intervention program. The ALS delivers specialised activities and learning programs that build students’ social skills and self-regulation in environments designed to effect positive and lasting change in their behaviour. The program has the capacity to provide access to specialists such as paediatricians, clinical psychologists or consultation with psychiatrists.
There are a number of ALS sites located in the metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia (WA) and the initiative will be expanding. Each setting accommodates up to 10 students who are provided with an intensive, individualised program of support while they continue their education. There is a strong focus on developing students’ social skills and ability to self-regulate.
The ALS are looking for an Associate Principal who displays high level communication skills, ideally with experience in building successful teams in student engagement and support systems. It will be highly regarded if the candidate has experience with establishing, and maintaining working relationships across education regions. The successful applicant will ideally be team focussed, as you will be joining an established, multi-disciplined team that has currently been developing the ALS across four education regions.
The Associate Principal will be provided with the unique opportunity to be part of the ongoing program design and development, as well as the implementation and establishment of new centres in regions throughout Western Australia. In this position you will be accountable for the effective operation of the ALS program, including existing sites as well as new sites. You will manage and supervise the ALS staff in collaboration with other specialists within the program and provide assistance to staff members to support the achievement of service delivery goals, compliance with legislative, policy, procedural and practice standards.
The role involves essential travel between each ALS site and includes overnight stays and air travel throughout WA. The successful applicant will be required to hold a current and valid ‘C’ class drivers licence.
The successful applicant will ideally have experience and credibility in student engagement, a background in student support and current professional learning or the capacity to undertake professional learning in areas such as trauma-informed practice, risk management, de-escalation skills, team teach, circle of courage and therapeutic crisis intervention in schools.
All functions of Statewide Services support successful outcomes for all students. This is achieved through a focus on better integration of services with schools, students, families and external service providers; supporting schools and networks of schools to deliver high quality teaching and learning in every classroom; and creating expanded opportunities for students to develop the academic, personal and social competencies they will need for participation in the workforce and society of the future.
