This is a three (3) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 4, 2021 with possible twelve (12) month extension and/or permanency
Bridgetown Primary School (PS) is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive individual to fill the position of Gardener - Handyperson.
The successful applicant will work to provide gardening, grounds and facility management to ensure a safe and clean school environment. You will maintain and present the school grounds and gardens in an attractive, clean and tidy condition, and provide a suitable growing environment for both soft and hard landscaping, including turf management. You will also ensure that formal and informal sports areas are marked as required. In this role, you will perform minor repairs and maintenance as requested, as well as other Gardener-Handyperson duties in accordance with the Department’s policies and guidelines. You will also provide advice to the Manager Corporate Services on school grounds maintenance.
The successful applicant will ideally possess good interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work unsupervised but also as part of a team. You will also ideally have an excellent working knowledge of gardening machinery and reticulation. We are looking for a team player with initiative to work collaboratively with our school community towards a vision for improvement of our grounds and someone who shows care towards our environment and takes pride in our school, including caring for our heritage roses.
Bridgetown PS moved to its current site in 1914 and has strong partnerships with its local community. We are a school where everybody feels valued and safe and where individual differences are respected and accepted.
The school has an active School Board and P&C Association who support the school as they continually improve our resources and facilities.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in maintaining grounds and gardens, including turf management.
- Experience in minor servicing of horticultural/gardening equipment and performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of gardening methods and procedures, including the safe use and storage of gardening equipment, materials and chemicals.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- Complete introductory School Gardener training within 3 months of commencement in metropolitan areas or as soon as practicable for regional areas
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
