Maylands Peninsula Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School (IPS) located in the suburb of Maylands approximately 5km east of the Perth CBD. There are currently 650 students across the school from K-6 with over half of these students in the K- 1 area. We have an ever-increasing number of students presenting at school with an EAL/D background (50%) with 70 different languages represented in the school.
Maylands Peninsula PS enjoys a high level of academic success in national testing agendas and widespread acknowledgement from external agencies for its pastoral care and learning programs for all students, including EAL/D students, students with additional needs and indigenous students.
In 2021 Maylands Peninsula PS began a three-year trial for a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Early Years Link program (CaLDEYLink). This high quality language priority multicultural playgroup enhances children’s developing social, emotional, language, physical and cognitive capabilities in the years before Kindergarten while valuing, supporting, and building on the capability and confidence of families as their child’s first educator. The playgroup promotes the school community to families, particularly those who have experienced a humanitarian migration journey (with possible trauma), as a safe and supportive environment.
Educators facilitate this high quality supported playgroup in Standard Australian English, with attending families encouraged to interact with their child using their home language or dialect with benefits that include strengthening home language foundations, continued family connections and strength of culture. Educators use the Early Years Learning Framework and the Abecedarian Approach Australia (3a) as the foundation to plan the program in conjunction with families. Sessions run for a minimum of 6 hours each week i.e. two 3 hour sessions or three 2 hour sessions with additional support from external agencies where required.
Maylands Peninsula PS is seeking an ECE qualified teacher with an understanding of the needs of EALD families to work alongside an Ethnic Educational Assistant to facilitate a friendly, open and welcoming multicultural playgroup. The successful applicant will ideally have strong interpersonal skills to promote the school’s values of inclusivity and diversity, foster positive relationships with families and their children and to liaise with a variety of stakeholders. While not essential, an understanding of 3a and how to apply the evidenced based teaching and learning strategies to the playgroup will be highly regarded by the Panel.
