Busselton Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative and dynamic Head of Learning Area (HOLA) - to lead the Science Learning Area. The successful applicant should possess outstanding leadership, organisation and interpersonal skills, whilst modelling a positive approach to student learning in line with our school priorities. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join an established leadership team dedicated to maintaining a strong school culture aligned to our current student needs. It is also desirable that applicants are able to show within the application previous experience with Professional Learning Communities, Positive Behaviour in schools and Explicit Direct Instruction in the domains of student outcomes and leading staff through a cycle of school improvement.
Busselton SHS’ Positive Behavioral Support (PBS), Growth Coaching and PERFORM Framework underpins the high-quality teaching and learning at all levels of the school. The successful applicant should reflect and assess the effectiveness of the Learning Area teaching practices, promote an environment of active and positive learning, and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential. With effective interpersonal skills, the successful applicant will work closely with students, colleagues and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for all students. The HOLA has an integral role in modelling their exemplary practice and building the capacity of their team to ensure high expectations and standards. The successful applicant is also expected to be accomplished in the feedback processes and classroom observation culture.
At Busselton SHS, the Science Learning Area is a high functioning Professional Learning Community of committed and dedicated teachers (at various stages of career development), delivering a range of innovative teaching and learning programs from Year 7 through to Senior School courses. The successful applicant will ideally be able to lead the delivery of quality teaching, learning and assessment programs and, in addition to their own teaching load. The HOLA Science will ideally possess a strong understanding of the pathways available in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. The capacity to teacher ATAR Physical Sciences will also be privileged due to operational requirements.
At Busselton SHS there is a clear focus on high standards of student achievement. Systematic assessment and reporting procedures are carried out at the highest level, confirming performance and guiding the setting of future targets for the school. The Head of Learning – Science, through their PLC, has a key role in leading school planning processes including: the analysis of student performance data, development of performance and improvement plans and application of an evidence-based approach to student performance.

Busselton SHS is situated in a coastal town in the South West of Western Australia. The School was established in 1958 and has served the community for over 60 years. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings.
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes.
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students, (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Hold a recognised teaching qualification and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
