The Department of Education’s Labour Relations team is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed Graduate Labour Relations Officer. We are seeking applicants who have recently completed or will complete in 2021, an undergraduate degree or postgraduate qualification that is relevant to industrial or labour relations. The Labour Relations team is located within the Employee Relations Branch.
The successful applicant will provide industrial relations advice, support and information, including interpretation and application of industrial instruments; and will be involved in the resolution of other industrial relations issues relevant to the Department. This will include providing advice directly to schools/central office managers and assisting senior officers negotiate with unions.
The successful applicant will report to the Director of Employee Relations and will provide support to the Directorate’s senior industrial staff as well as undertake research and project work. The successful applicant will also report on emerging trends and assist in the preparation of Ministerial correspondence.
Employee Relations Branch is responsible for ensuring that industrial instruments and legislative frameworks are complied with and that employees are supported in a range of discrete human resource matters. It provides strategic and operational advice to the Minister, Director General, school leaders and line managers on a range of employee relations matters.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our division for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Sound oral, written presentation and interpersonal communication skills. This includes experience in consulting effectively with others, the ability to manage conflict and influence others.
- Sound research, conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to make evidence based recommendations.
- Initiative and sound organisational skills including the ability to effectively multi task, prioritise, meet deadlines and work effectively within a team environment

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
- hold a tertiary degree relevant to labour relations
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
