Appointment Pool
We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2022 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022 school year.
As an Education Assistant - Special Needs you will, under teacher direction, assist in the education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The suitable applicants will assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional and physical skills. Competency in the use of a range of technology tools, such as computers and electronic devices is expected. Also, when required, the Education Assistant – Special Needs will provide feedback on education programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals.
Spencer Park Education Support Centre's (SPESC's) vision of “Partnerships for Success Learning” places a strong focus on providing Students in the areas of ‘Learning’, ‘Inclusion’ and their ‘Wellbeing. We are situated alongside the Spencer Park Primary School and work closely with them at every opportunity providing inclusivity within the students social and learning programs.
All students show progress and achievement in their learning against their individualised learning plans and programs. Experience and understanding of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Antecedent, Behaviour and Consequence (ABC) and applying appropriate interventions is highly desirable when working with our students and in management of engagement in learning, challenging behaviours and meeting sensory needs. With an additional underpinning belief that all behaviour is communication, every student has the right to have a voice and to be heard, SPESC makes this possible through the use of various modes of AAC such as PODD devices, AUSLAN and Key Word Sign.
In supporting students learning to self-regulated emotions and engage in social experiences SPESC employees Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) expectations that supports each student learning to “Be Safe, Be Friendly and to Be Your Best.”
SPESC is one of five support centres in Western Australia to offer a specialised learning program for children in Kindergarten and Pre-primary with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and Autism (ASD). Through the Early Intervention Program students work mostly one-on-one in an explicit instruction model designed to prepare children for Year 1 at their local mainstream school.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
- Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
- Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
- Ability to assist with the general health and wellbeing of students

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
